The Great Baby Teeth Debate (or not…whatever)

I don’t consider myself an overly sentimental person.

Shocking. I know.

I’m a big fan of trashing stuff I don’t want. I don’t keep every piece of school work that comes home. I save a few things, I see if the kids want to save a few things, and then the rest makes it to the recycling bin.

One thing I’ve saved religiously for both kids since Jake had his tragically removed lost his first is their baby teeth.

Every tooth that has fallen out of (or been forcibly removed from) their mouths is saved. They each have their own boxes of teeth.

Jake is now losing his baby molars like it’s his job.

The kids tuck their precious teeth away in their Tooth Fairy pouches (side note: Tooth Fairy pouches that hang on doorknobs are the best invention ever…especially for light sleepers *cough* EMMA *cough*) and I hopefully remember to take them out and replace it with coins and then I put the teeth in a box.

As the box is growing more full, I now ask myself…WHY?

WHY am I saving their teeth? What in the hell am I going to do with them? Give them back?

Scene: Thea presents Jacob with a beautifully wrapped box for his 18th birthday.

Jake: (Opens box to find a mouthful of teeth) What in the hell??

Thea: I’ve worked really hard over the years to save every tooth you’ve ever lost. How wonderful am I?

Jake: MOM! That’s really gross!

Emma: (runs from the room screaming) AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!

Or. Maybe there’s an alternate ending for one of them…

Thea: I’ve worked really hard over the years to save every tooth you’ve ever lost. How wonderful am I?

Jake: MOM! That’s really gross!

Emma: (enthralled) How cool is that?? Did you save all mine, too?? Can I have them now??

So. I put the question to you, dear readers.

Do you save your kids baby teeth?

If so, why??

What do you plan to do with them?

I saved them for awhile but then the gross factor took over and they got tossed out. I’m going to be losing a wisdom tooth in the not too distant future, would you like me to send it to you?

I started saving out of obligation… but then began to question it. Especially after I found an odd tooth on my closet shelf and couldn’t figure out whose it was (I have four kids,, I get sleep deprived, m’kay? no judging!). After that I too asked, “why?” . So I tossed and now feel guilty only once in a while.

Yes. I started with the first lost tooth, and I just kept saving. I have no idea. The funny thing is that I cleaned out the basket that they’re in, thought I should just throw them away, and I couldn’t bring myself to toss them.
