Fitness Friday – The Running Partner Edition

The Half Marathon is over.

My next race is on Thanksgiving Day.

I find myself in that weird semi-downtime between monthly races where I want to take a deep breath, but I really can’t because I already have to look forward.

Before today, I had not run since the half marathon. I did the Run the ‘Hood Virtual 5k last weekend, but there was no running involved for me. I’ll have to admit, I’ve been a bit nervous to get back to running. I was just expecting for everything to kind of fall apart.

I knew that I had to get back to running eventually. I had come up with a whole speed plan because I wanted to PR my November race, but I had to put that idea on hold because Jacob said he wanted to run the race with me. I will gladly take his involvement over a PR anyday.

I told him that if he wanted to run with me, that he really had to train. Even though we’d been registered for weeks, he didn’t really train for the Run the ‘Hood event and pretty much just got up on Saturday and ran a 5k. I don’t think that’s such a great idea.

He agreed that he would train and he said that we could go for a run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. I came up with a schedule and today was the first day.

Today was slated to be our first training run. Today also happened to be a running fundraiser at his school. I told him that if he wanted, I would come up to the school and run with him and that would count as our 1 mile. He said that would work, so I headed to school.

We managed to get a mile in while navigating a very small track filled with about 250 students and teachers. Dave and I have tried to talk with him before about pacing and not going out to fast. He was having none of that today. He was off like a shot when they got the signal to go.

Anyhoo, it was a great day and everyone in the school had a blast. Jake got his first Turkey Trot Training Run in…but we’ll see how long it lasts. He came up with a time goal, I’ll just have to keep impressing upon him how important it is to work towards your goal instead of just expecting it to happen because you want it to.

Only time will tell…

  1. What a great running partner for you! Last year my grandkids ran the Turkey Trot with me and it meant the world to me to be able to wog with them. Of course they would have left me in the dust if I hadn’t of told them they had to stay close by. But it was a great time!
