Of Grape Nuts and Flickering Leaves

As I write this, we are under a Tornado Watch.

Naturally, that makes me want to eat Grape Nuts.

When I was growing up, the house we lived in had a huge picture window in the front of the house. When the drapes were open, you could see so much up and down the street.

There were these trees on the property that was kitty-corner to our house. I don’t know what kind of tree it was, but the leaves were darker on one side and much lighter on the other.

When really bad storms rolled in, I would stand at that picture window and watch the wind whip the leaves around. So fast, they would change color just by flipping over.

Sometimes, I would grab a huge bowl of Grape Nuts, drown it in milk, blanket it in sugar and head back to the window.

It was a strange combination: fear of the storm, awe at the beauty of it, comfort from the food.

I would stand transfixed at the window long after the food was gone and the storm had passed. I don’t know what I was waiting for, but it was almost as if I was going to miss something if I had walked away.

To this day, when the wind is whipping outside, I miss those leaves.

And of course, I miss the Grape Nuts.
